I went to a concert of a well-known contemporary music ensemble whose biography promised to be “dedicated to the proposition that music is an experience.” New masterpieces of our time, the writer confidently stated, are “beautiful, sensuous, challenging, delightful, provocative, and a unique joy.” I’m curmudgeonly enough to find this sort of writing irritating, but I was still looking forward to the concert.
