My Teaching Philosophy (click to expand)
The cello should be your partner in musical discovery, not your adversary in the practice room. Every student who majors in cello at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music will learn to grow their music careers with meaning and purpose. My teaching approach centers on understanding what every cello student needs to succeed, and helping them grow their musicianship.
In our lessons, chamber music coachings, and weekly studio and technique classes, we explore why music works the way it does—when you know the what, how, and why of a piece, from Bach to contemporary composers writing today, technique becomes a tool for expression rather than a series of exercises to endure. Whether you’re tackling your first concerto or diving into chamber music, I’ll help you connect the dots between what you’re practicing and what you’re trying to communicate, so every lesson builds both your skills and your confidence as a professional musician.
My students learn to think like performers from day one, because understanding how music fits together historically and analytically transforms how you approach everything from bow distribution to stage presence—and that transformation turns struggle into curiosity and frustration into excitement about what you’ll discover next.
