My Teaching Philosophy (click to expand)
Every student who majors in cello at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music will learn to grow their music career with meaning and purpose. My teaching approach centers on understanding what every cello student needs to succeed, meeting them where they are, and giving them detailed help for developing their musicianship.
In cello lessons, chamber music coachings, and weekly cello studio and technique classes, we explore how and why music works the way it does. When you understand how a piece works, whether it’s by Bach or a living composer, technique becomes a tool for artistic expression. My students learn to think like performers from day one, because understanding how music fits together historically and analytically transforms how you approach everything from bow distribution to stage presence—and that transformation turns struggle and frustration into curiosity and excitement about all kinds of music.
